TEXTS:

Lawrence Green's Great Big Guitar Method and The Complete Guitar Player Songbook. Get them at: the Great Salt Lake Guitar Co., 362 West Center Street, Provo, 801-375-4435. You must also have a guitar in at least tolerable playing condition.

PRACTICE TIME NEEDED:

30 minutes a day, minimum.

MATERIAL STUDIED:

This is a beginning guitar class for those who want to learn folk guitar styles; strums; fingerpicking; basic chords; keys; time signatures; beginning note reading, etc. Here is an approximation of the semester, week by week:

Week 1: Tuning; misc. items; Key of D major; Strums (lesson 1)
Week 2: D and G keys; continue Strums (lesson 2)
Week 3: D, G, and C keys; Using the Capo; Bass/Strums; Bass Notes (lessons 3 & 4 )
Week 4: A and E keys,
Week 5: Fingerpicks (lessons 5 and 6 )
Week 6: Songs; continue review;
Week 7: Songs; continue review;
Week 8: Playing by Ear (lesson 7); Note Reading, p. 83 Travis Pick (lesson 8)
Week 9: Continue Travis Pick; Watch for the QUIZ link in an email!!!
Week 10: Finish Travis Pick; Chord Hammer-Ons (lesson 9); Songs
Week 11: Continue Chord Hammer-Ons; Songs
Week 12: Transposition; Bar Chords
Week 13: Continue Bar Chords; more about Tuning; Songs; Review for W section
Week 14: Review for MW and TTH sections; April 7th is WRITTEN TEST night for W class.
Week 15: April 12th and 13th are WRITTEN TEST nights for MW, TTH sections;
There will be continual review of previous material as much as possible, throughout the term.

ATTENDANCE:

Mandatory; 2 hours a week any of the days offered. Attendance is taken twice during the term on un-announced days; attendance is only counted if absences are a problem.

GRADES ARE BASED ON THREE AREAS

1) QUIZ at Mid-Term. Given near the beginning of March; covers lessons 1-6. This will be a diagnostic quiz for you to see your progress in understanding the concepts. I will email you a link to the quiz. If you don't have an email address, please update with the proper authorities! Print the quiz and take it on your own without looking at the text. Then, look up the answers and use the quiz to help you study for the Great Big Guitar Final.

2) ATTEND THREE (3) CONCERTS where guitar is principle or prominent--folk, classical and jazz, and I'll even count rock if the guitar players can play. A list will be sent via email within two weeks of the beginning of class. Please check with the instructor for approval of any concert not on the list. Only approved concerts count. In addition to anything happening on campus, you can also go to any of the following: Borders Bookstore 801-224-2720; Muse Music, Club Velour or any other venue of this type. You will write the attended concerts on your final exam answer sheet. Please save concert information--tickets, programs, etc. You are responsible for correct concert information that you write down on your test answer sheet. At this point I have just a few concerts to list with incomplete info, but this will be updated, so check occasionally.

Synthesis, an on-campus event; please check with HFAC box office for date and times.
Jazz Ensemble, an on-campus event; please check with HFAC box office for date and times.
Folk Ensemble, an on-campus event; please check with HFAC box office for date and times.
Guitars Unplugged, an on-campus event, usually in March; please check with ASBYU for date and times.
Acoustic Explosion, an on-campus event that occurs each month; please check with ASBYU for date and times.
Lawrence Green, classical guitar recital, Date and Time TBA.

3) WRITTEN TEST Based on facts in the text, pages 9-102; 242-243. THE TEST IS GIVEN DURING THE LAST PERIOD OF CLASS which is 7 April (W section), 12 April (MW section) and 13 April (TTH section). You may take the test on any night offered. At this time, you will report your concerts attended. I don't want any physical paper, just the names of the concerts.
